Beacon Hill Historic District and Beacon Hill Architectural Commission are established.
July 28, 1955
Created by the Massachusetts legislature, the district is initially made up of 22 acres of the South Slope. It is expanded to include the Flats in 1958 and the North Slope in 1963. Frederic Jahner later writes, “Beginning in 1796, Brahmins bought up land and built family mansions on Beacon Hill. . . To this day parts of the Hill remain an upper-class district and descendants of the original investors live in some of the old houses. . . Arrivistes moved here to legitimize their acquired status and joined oldtimers in fighting to save the historical, genealogical and esthetic integrity of the neighborhood.”
